Advantages

You get more product: Most items costs way less when you buy them in bulk, as a matter of fact; this pin here claims that buying food in bulk costs a whopping 89% less. WOW could it be?

Never running out: Another solid advantage is the fact that you never run out of items. How many times have you tried doing a recipe and find out you’re missing a vital ingredient?

Going Green: A major plus for bulk buying is that it shrinks the carbon and energy footprint on the product packaging. How cool is that?

These are the main advantages of bulk buying, I’m sure there are more but these three overshadow the rest. How can you compare to money saving, peace of mind and helping the environment?

Disadvantages

Bulk buying without control can really get messy!

Bulk buying without control can really get messy!

Lack of variety: A major downer in bulk buying is the unavoidable fact that if say you buy 10 litres of shampoo. You’re stuck with it, like or not you’re going to have to finish that up. Obviously throwing it all out would be totally counter productive to you trying to save money.

Storage: If you live in a tiny apartment like me; three stories up with no lift. Bulk buying is going to be difficult for you. Make sure you have the necessary space for it. If you leave it lying around everywhere causing you a big mess and a clutter problem, the positives will outweigh the negatives.

Some items do not last: This isn’t exactly a disadvantage of bulk buying, it’s more poor shopping skills kind of issue. Make sure you buy in bulk something that can keep well.

Products that are great to buy in bulk:

  • oats,lentils & nuts
  • tea & coffee
  • bottled water (although you should consider getting a water filter)
  • honey
  • mason jars (for storing)

also

  • toilet rolls & paper towels
  • washing up liquid
  • toothpaste
  • soap & shampoo
  • hand wash liquid

Tips For Bulk Buying

The Advantages & Disadvantages Of Bulk Buying

Only buy things you use a lot: Personally I would never ever buy 5 gallons of car shampoo because I never wash my car LOL! Whatever you buy, make sure you use it regularly and you’re going to use it relatively fast!

Prepare Storage: When buying in bulk, make sure to have space for it. As we said, this is a major headache. Find out ways to make it work with little issues as possible! It would also help to not over do it…

Don’t Over Do It: Don’t go buying 500 rolls of toilet paper or 50 liters of washing up liquid. You’re not a hotel. Just buy big enough to save you a nice chunk of change. Also make sure you get the best deals…

Scoop out the offers: Check your local stores and also online retailers like Amazon for offers and deals. Since you’re going to be buying large amounts, make sure you get the absolute best price for it. Also it never hurts to have an eBates account for cash back on purchases.

So, what do you think? Is bulk buying something you’re considering?
